Bravo, Bravo! Audra McDonald Snags Historic Tony Award Win (VIDEOS)

Tuesday, June 12, 2012

We must congratulate Audra McDonald who made history during Sunday’s Tony Awards celebration! McDonald became  the first black woman to claim 5 Tony Award wins. She picked up another award for Best Leading Actress In A Musical (for Porgy & Bess). This ties her with the record held by Angela Lansbury and Julie Harris.

Shadow And Act reports:

In addition to Audra’s win, other wins of note include: the Raisin In The Sun-inspired Clybourne Park (whichWendell Pierce is a producer on; I saw it and reviewed the play HERE) winning the Tony for Best Play, and Porgy & Bess winning the Tony for Best Revival Of A Musical (it won 2 awards).

The 41-year-old actress started the performance with the classic song “Summertime” before being joined by her fellow Tony-nominated co-stars Norm Lewis and David Alan Grier for a medley from the show.

Audra’s win makes her only the 7th black woman to win a Tony Award in the category she won for last night - Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical. The last time was when LaChanze won the award for her performance inThe Color Purple, in 2006.

She so deserved it too! She truly is a treasure to the American Theatre.

This was much deserved for her. It’s good to see black people still in the theatre doing good work.
