The story is narrated by a teenager who goes by the alias of “Charlie”; he describes various scenes in his life by writing a series of letters to an anonymous person, whom he does not know personally. Charlie is an unconventional thinker, and as the story begins he is shy and unpopular.
During the story, he goes through situations such as introversion, drug use, and the awkward times of adolescence. As the story progresses, various works of literature and film are referenced and their meanings discussed. The book also covers homosexuality, sex, suicide, etc. The characters are complex and hard to resist.
The story takes place in a suburb of Pittsburgh during the 1991–1992 school year, when Charlie is a high school freshman. Charlie is the titular wallflower of the novel.
It was a critically acclaimed bestseller, selling more than 700,000 copies back in 2007. Now you get to see it on the big screen. Directed and written by the author himself, you get see Charlie’s story real soon. The actors in the film are Logan Lerman as Charlie, Emma Watson, Erza Miller, Kate Walsh, Paul Rudd, and many more.
MTV recently released a preview of the movie. A release date hasn’t been released yet. So we’ll have to wait and see when we get to see the film adaptation of this amazing coming of age novel.
