Raise The Flag: Four Black Gays Living The American Dream

Lee Daniels

Daniels’ films are known to push the envelope in every direction; from a murder-for-hire interracial stepmother and stepson in 2005’s Shadowboxer, to a sordid, incestuous mother and daughter in 2009’s Precious, Daniels has never been one to back away from a controversial script, but instead rises to the challenge and brings it to life in a way that audiences can sympathize with the film’s protagonist and antagonist (i.e., Mo’Nique’s chilling portrayal of Mary Jones), and appreciate the artistic value of storytelling. Daniels has been with his partner, Andy Sforzini, since 2009.

Very interesting mainstream choices. I could only imagine the hard time developing this list. We don’t have many in the public eye. Hopefully things change for our future.

I’m influenced most by the legacy and remarkable history of James Baldwin and Bayard Rustin.
